The Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center has received a $50,000 grant from the Connecticut affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure to help provide breast cancer diagnosis and treatment to uninsured women. This is the single largest amount ever awarded in Connecticut by Susan G. Komen for the Cure. “This grant represents a very generous increase in support from Susan G. Komen for the Cure,” says Donna Twist, Ph.D., the Breast Care Center’s Vice President for Development and Executive Director. “We are extremely grateful for their continued support of our programs. These funds will be put to good use in providing needed services to women without health insurance or with insufficient insurance who cannot pay for screening and diagnostic tests and procedures on their own.” Proceeds for the grant are from last fall’s Komen Connecticut Race for the Cure® and other fundraising initiatives. This is the seventh consecutive year that the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center has received grant funding from the Komen organization. Part of the Norma F. Pfriem Cancer Institute at Bridgeport Hospital, the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center has served more than 15,000 women and their families since it was established in 1999. A member of the prestigious National Consortium of Breast Care Centers, the Center provides a wide range of diagnostic care and treatment at Bridgeport Hospital including medical oncology, surgical and chemotherapy services, as well as mammography and radiation therapy, genetic risk assessment and opportunity for clinical trials. The Breast Care Center at 111 Beach Road in Fairfield provides surgical services, medical oncology, nutrition counseling, massage therapy, wig and prosthesis fitting and other patient support activities.
