Community Partnerships

Bridgeport Hospital works with a number of community and government organizations on health and wellness and community improvement initiatives. In FY 2007 these included:

  • In September 2007, the Hospital presented its sixth annual Fairfield County Hero Award to a Stratford emergency medical technician who helped save the life of a local man. Established in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the Fairfield County Hero Award recognizes the heroic contributions of police, fire and ambulance personnel in the Greater Bridgeport community. Nearly 100 members of the area’s emergency services have been recognized through the annual award program since its inception.
  • The Hospital continued its participation in the Bridgeport-based Primary Care Action Group with St. Vincent’s Medical Center, AmeriCares, Bridgeport Community Health Center, the City of Bridgeport, Southwest Community Health Center and other providers. The group held monthly meetings to address local issues regarding coverage and care for the uninsured community.
  • A total of 122 pints of blood were collected during three American Red Cross blood drives held at Bridgeport Hospital in FY 2007. An estimated 366 people benefited from the donations.
  • The Hospital co-chaired the Southern Regional Sickle Cell Association Walkathon, which included a team of Hospital employees. A Hospital representative also participates on the board and the Hospital serves as host site for meetings.
  • The Heart Institute recruited a team of 140 people for the American Heart Association’s (AHA) October 2006 American Heart Walk at Sherwood Island State Park. Proceeds from the event supported AHA cardiac research and patient education initiatives, which in turn benefited patients at Bridgeport Hospital.
  • Hospital representatives also serve on a number of governing boards for area non-profits including the Center for Women and Families, Optimus Health Care, Visiting Nurse Services of Connecticut, Ronald McDonald House, the Greater Bridgeport Adolescent Pregnancy Program, Ground Work Bridgeport, the Bridgeport Child Advocacy Coalition, the Bridgeport Health Improvement Partnership, Regional Youth Adult Substance Abuse Project (RYASAP), the United Way of Eastern Fairfield County, the Bridgeport Rotary Club, the Bridgeport Regional Business Council, the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce, the Trumbull Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Greater Bridgeport and the Barnum Museum.
