Neonatology Our neonatologists work as a team with our perinatologists to give pregnant women and their infants the most advanced care. Neonatologists specialize in the care of critically ill or low-birthweight infants. (Neo = new; natal = birth.)

Bridgeport Hospital has five board-certified neonatologists on staff:

  • Robert Herzlinger, MD, chief of Neonatology (in photo)
  • Christine Butler, MD
  • Richard Freedman, MD
  • Harris Jacobs, MD
  • Cheryl Menzies, MD (in photo)

The department of pediatrics also has full-time, in-house specialists in pediatric cardiology and pulmonology, with pediatric neurologists and gastroenterologists (specialists in the digestive system) also available.

And when NBICU graduates go home, our care doesn't end there. Our Follow-Up program, unique in Fairfield County, emphasizes long-term outcomes. Through this program, graduates are monitored to be sure they are developing well. If there are any special needs, the family will be referred to the correct specialists.
