Bridgeport Hospital's newly renovated, 20-bassinet Newborn Intensive Care Unit is a Level III (highest level) NBICU where premature, low-birthweight, or critically ill newborns are given special care. The NBICU recently celebrated its 30th anniversary.
The NBICU is located in spacious, bright quarters that allow us to provide optimal care to infants and their parents. About 300 babies each year are cared for in the NBICU, including twins, triplets, and even quadruplets! Many infants are transferred from other hospitals when theys unexpectedly develop problems requiring our expertise.
Infants rest in special isolettes that keep them warm, while monitors record their blood pressure, the amount of oxygen in their blood, and other crucial information. Specially trained nurses and physicians watch over them 24 hours a day.
In the NBICU, both babies and their families are given tender, loving care and support. Moms and dads are welcome any time, 24 hours a day, to touch, hold, and bond with their baby. Big brothers and sisters can come too, from 4-8 p.m. on weekdays. The unit includes a room where parents can stay overnight, and private breastfeeding rooms are available for new moms to nurse their infants as soon as the little ones are ready.
Bridgeport Hospital's NBICU is closely affiliated with the Newborn Special Nursery at Yale-New Haven Hospital, enhancing the care for infants in our unit.
