Graduate Medical Education

Bridgeport Hospital is a Yale-affiliated community teaching hospital. As a resident in training at Bridgeport Hospital in any of the seven residencies or as a fellow in one of the three fellowship programs, you receive preparation for a lifetime of learning. Training at Bridgeport Hospital provides you with clinical supervision, didactic lectures and clinical skill through bedside teaching, formal lectures and seminars, and graded patient care responsibility. Our residents go on to take subspecialty fellowships, assume junior faculty positions, or join an existing group practice. All residents are required to do at least one research project and full support is given for any scholarly activity. Bridgeport Hospital offers training programs in Emergency Medicine, Medicine, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Primary Care (Combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics), Radiology, and Surgery, as well as three fellowship training programs: Cardiology, Gastroenterology (G.I.) and Pulmonary/Intensive Care. Residents are supported by a full range of clinical services, including nurses, phlebotomists, radiology technicians, case managers, social workers, allied health professionals, nutritionists, and pastoral care. Patients are drawn from urban, suburban, and rural areas, and provide residents with experience in managing and caring for a wide variety of medical problems, ages, and demographic backgrounds.

Spiritual Care & Education Department

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is interfaith professional education which brings theological students and ministers of all faiths (pastors, priests, rabbis, imams, and others) into supervised encounters with persons in crisis. Students develop new awareness of themselves as persons and of the needs of those to whom they minister. CPE is an experience in process education. The heart of CPE is ministry with people and learning through reflection, discussion, and evaluation with other students and supervisors.

Our CPE program is geared toward those interested in advanced education who have completed undergraduate degrees and have some theological education. In addition, applicants should have the ability to reflect upon the psychodynamics and cultural/spiritual implications of significant events in their lives.
