Geriatric Assessment
For many older adults, the first step to finding the right care is a geriatric assessment. The experts in Bridgeport Hospital's Geriatric Assessment Program perform tests that can reveal the reasons for many conditions. These include depression, memory loss, behavior problems, frequent falls, dizzy spells, problems with urination, side effects from medicines, and other difficulties. A full assessment, which takes about 1.5 hours, includes
- Gathering information to understand the personal and family medical history.
- A full physical exam.
- Tests and screenings to evaluate the older adult physically, emotionally, and mentally.
- A questionnaire for family members. This can help identify problems and solutions.
- A review of all drugs and supplements the older adult is taking.
Geriatric assessment paves the way for problem-solving. Once we understand what is causing the patient's behavioral, emotional, or physical difficulties, we can work out the best solutions. We work closely with your primary care physician to achieve the best results.
