Nitrates
Nitrates work by dilating the veins, which means the heart doesn't have to beat as hard to move blood along. Nitrates also dilate the arteries in the heart, which improves blood flow to the heart muscle. They also have a mild anti-clotting effect. These medications can be given through a skin patch, ointment, or through pills (swallowable, chewable, or dissolvable under the tongue [sub-lingual].)
