After any type of open-heart surgery, patients go to The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). Here every breath and heartbeat is monitored by sophisticated equipment and by nurses specially trained in caring for heart patients and interpreting the readings from the monitors. Each SICU nurse watches over just two patients, ensuring that patients receive the most intensive care possible. When surgical patients are ready, they graduate from the SICU to Richardson 7 ( surgical telemetry unit). |
