Recent Advancements

Bridgeport Hospital has led the way with recent advancements that have dramatically improved the care of neurosurgical patients. These include:

This allows the neurosurgical team to position with great precision a probe that is used to reach and sample the tumor. Instead of having to remove a large piece of skull, the surgeon makes only a small hole in order to reach the tumor with the probe.

  • Stereotactic brain surgery makes it easier to pinpoint and treat trouble spots such as tumors in the brain. Using sophisticated computer software, the surgeon can obtain with great accuracy an image that shows the coordinates (location) of the tumor in three dimensions: vertically, horizontally and laterally.
  • Interactive three-dimensional brain imaging. An evolved form of stereotactic imaging, this state-of-the-art computerized navigation system provides a three-dimensional inside view of the brain. The new system provides interactive computer images while the procedure is actually in progress. Not only can surgeons see, on a monitor, the parts of the brain or spine on which they are operating, but the system tracks and displays the precise movements of their surgical instruments. The result: the diseased areas are directly accessed and healthy tissue remains untouched. Three-dimensional imaging is also a valuable tool in locating irregularities such as tumors and abscesses.
  • Intraoperative Angiography. (Intra=during; operative=surgery) Using digital-imaging techniques, real-time X-ray images show the blood vessels in the brain, just as heart angiograms show the arteries of the heart. These images are "live" because they are taken during the operation, providing a continuous view of the surgery's progress. Using this technique, a team of specially-trained surgical and radiologic experts can locate and repair arterial venous malformations (AVMs), aneurysms and other causes of brain hemorrhage.
  • Advanced Spinal Surgery Capability. Bridgeport Hospital has one of the longest-standing specialty spine programs in Connecticut with expertise in total spinal reconstruction and instrumentation.
  • Refractory Facial Pain Motor Spasms. This condition can frequently be addressed through surgery when other measures fail. If our team feels that surgery is not indicated, referrals for Gamma Knife evaluations can be made.
  • Pediatric Surgery Experience. Bridgeport Hospital is one of the leading providers of healthcare services to children in Connecticut with decades of pediatric surgical experience.
