Bridgeport Hospital Has Connecticut's ONLY Accredited Chest Pain Center

What would you do if you, or someone you love, felt that chest discomfort-that "Could this really be a heart attack?" feeling that we all dread. Do you know where you'd go for emergency cardiac care?

Consider this: The Society of Chest Pain Centers has designated The Chest Pain Center at Bridgeport Hospital as Connecticut's first and only accredited chest pain center. Only 41 other chest pain centers in the entire nation have received the Society's accreditation.

In order to gain this prestigious distinction, The Chest Pain Center has demonstrated expertise in these important functions:

Providing emergency angioplasty to heart attack patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in a timely fashion
Integrating the Emergency Department with the local emergency medical system
Assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients quickly
Maintaining organizational structure and commitment
Continually seeking to improve processes and procedures
Supporting community outreach programs that educate the public to promptly seek medical care if they have symptoms of a possible heart attack
Effectively treating patients with low risk for heart attack and no immediately detectable cause for their symptoms.
Ensuring Chest Pain Center personnel competency and training.
Having a layout that promotes optimal patient care.

Established in 1994, The Chest Pain Center is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. "This was the first service of its kind in Connecticut dedicated to the rapid diagnosis and treatment of patients with chest pain-whether their pain turns out to be a heart attack or not," explains Michael Werdmann, MD, the hospital's Emergency Department chairman. "The accreditation is not just about what happens in the Emergency Department, where the Chest Pain Center is located, but it's about all aspects of cardiac care at Bridgeport Hospital, from the initial evaluation through the patient's hospital stay and even community education," he adds.

Above all, the goal of The Chest Pain Center staff is to make sure that their patients are surrounded by a culture of quality and safety that will ensure the very best-and swiftest-care.
