Bridgeport Hospital has a new heart valve clinic that can make a significant difference for some patients.
The new clinic gives patients with severe aortic stenosis (narrowing of the aortic heart valve) and who are at increased risk of aortic valve replacement through openheart surgery an opportunity to be evaluated for a new valve replacement procedure called TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement).
The TAVR procedure places a valve into the aorta (the heart’s main artery) using a thin tube called a catheter. This less-invasive treatment option is a great alternative for patients who don’t qualify for open-heart surgery, especially those who are too weak or sick.
The TAVR clinic at the Bridgeport Campus, which opened in May, sees patients on Tuesday. It includes cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons from both Bridgeport Hospital and Yale-New Haven Hospital and reflects the commitment of the Yale New Haven Health System to deliver top-quality care throughout the state.
