Richard Garvey, MD, Surgery, was designated an expert on Liberia and Haiti during the fifth biennial World Health Organization meeting for essential and emergent surgery in low- and middle-income countries, Oct. 14-18. The meeting, in Port-of- Spain, Trinidad, was in conjunction with the World Congress of Surgery, Obstetrics, Trauma and Anesthesia, which brings together experts from multiple disciplines to share the latest research, technology and innovation. He also presented a paper which he and Mark Maxfield, MD, Surgery, co-authored, entitled Operating in a Resource-limited Environment: Lessons Learned from Surgical Missions to Haiti.

Steven Levine, MD, Otolaryngology, is lead author of a paper entitled In-office Stand-alone Balloon Dilation of Maxillary Sinus Ostia and Ethmoid Infundibula in Adults with Chronic or Recurrent Acute Rhinosinusitis: A Prospective, Multi-institutional Study with One-Year Follow-Up. The paper appears in The Annals of Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology medical journal.

Shady Henien, MD, Medicine, was recently elected national resident sectional delegate to the House of Delegates of the American Medical Association (AMA). The House of Delegates is the AMA’s principal policy-making body.

It is with sadness that we note the passing of Dr. Pasquale “Pat” Perillie, a tremendous chairman of Medicine here for many years.
