May is National Mental Health Awareness month and given the significance to our profession and patients, I thought I would use this month’s message to highlight it. Mental illness is so common that all of us either have struggled with it personally or know family members or good friends who struggled with one or more kinds of mental illness.

Although the Senate voted to approve a bill that will delay the implementation of ICD-10 by at least a year, Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) will continue to move forward with ICD-10 implementation.

Sometime soon, Epic will provide information on Medicare reimbursement rates for laboratory/blood bank orders. These will be rates for outpatient testing across Yale New Haven Health System.

For the last three years, Connecticut hospitals have worked with Connecticut Hospital Association (CHA) and Healthcare Performance Improvement (HPI) on a statewide initiative to become High Reliability Organizations (HROs) – organizations that operate successfully in high-risk industries.

On April 3, Bridgeport Hospital became the first Fairfield County hospital to implant the Medtronic Reveal LINQ insertable cardiac monitor system, the smallest implantable cardiac monitoring device available. The procedure was done by a team led by cardiac electrophysiologist Murali Chiravuri, MD.

Bridgeport Hospital offers a simple, 20-minute, noninvasive breath test to detect Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria, which is responsible for most ulcers, gastric cancer and stomach inflammation. The test can identify nearly all patients with H. pylori or confirm an H. pylori infection was fully treated.

On April 16, Bridgeport Hospital and other organizations and providers nationwide celebrated National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD), which raises awareness about the importance of advance healthcare planning, such as living wills and advance directives.

The Bridgeport Hospital Emergency Care Institute’s paramedic training program, established in 1995 and the only Fairfield County program, is now one of only four in Connecticut to become nationally accredited. One of the oldest continually running programs in Connecticut, it recently graduated its 20th anniversary class.

Traci Marquis-Eydman, MD, was recently named Northeast Medical Group (NEMG) medical director for patient experience.

Robert Stiller, MD, chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and vice chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology, authored an article for the April issue of Contemporary Ob/Gyn magazine entitled “Four ways to lower your risk of an obstetric malpractice suit.”

Connecticut Magazine named nearly 80 Bridgeport Hospital physicians and over 270 from throughout Yale New Haven Health System among the state’s best in its annual “Top Doctors” issue in April.
