National Consortium of Breast Centers recognizes Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center education program

For the second year in a row, the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center has been recognized by the National Consortium of Breast Centers for its outreach programs in Bridgeport.

The Breast Care Center presented a new outreach program at the Consortium’s 21st Annual National Interdisciplinary Breast Center Conference in March. The program, an offshoot of Mujer a Mujer/Woman to Woman, the Breast Care Center’s outreach program for underserved women, was developed by Sally Cascella, Senior Nurse Educator/Nurse Navigator, and Jackie Keren, Communications Associate at the Breast Care Center.

“We’re thrilled to be recognized by the Consortium,” says Dr. Donna Twist, executive director of the Breast Care Center. “This program is unique, and disseminating it to other breast care centers is so important.”

The program is a collaboration between the Breast Care Center and the Holy Rosary Church Food Pantry in Bridgeport. A food pantry is a unique location for a breast cancer awareness program but one especially chosen to reach women who are low income and have difficulty navigating the healthcare system because of language and cultural barriers. Many of these women have never had a mammogram and have not seen a doctor in years.

The program has already saved lives. Women with abnormal results receive diagnostic and treatment services at the Breast Care Center. “Many of the women we meet at the food pantry will not venture outside the neighborhood for healthcare. This program brings health information and access to a clinic to them,” says Cascella.

“Sally and Jackie have had to think creatively about how to get women screened,” says Twist. “Many women don’t know that we can help them regardless of their insurance status.”

Part of the Norma F. Pfriem Cancer Institute at Bridgeport Hospital, the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center has served more than 18,000 women and their families since it was established in 1999. A member of the prestigious National Consortium of Breast Care Centers, the Center provides a wide range of diagnostic care and treatment at its Bridgeport Hospital and Fairfield locations, including medical oncology, surgical and chemotherapy services, plastic surgery, mammography and radiation therapy, and genetic risk assessment as well as opportunities to participate in clinical trials.

The Breast Care Center office at 111 Beach Road in Fairfield also provides comprehensive women’s wellness services, including nutrition counseling, massage and Reiki therapy, wig and prosthesis fitting, counseling, yoga, Pilates, naturopathic medicine, and other patient support activities. The Center has a satellite office on Park Avenue in Trumbull.
