Bridgeport Hospital Auxiliary completes $500,000 pledge to emergency department expansion and renovation

With a $50,000 check delivered at its March 26 annual gala reception, the Bridgeport Hospital Auxiliary completed its $500,000 multi-year pledge to support the expansion and renovation of the hospital’s emergency department. The event also paid tribute to the immediate past chairman of the hospital board of directors, attorney Ronald Noren of Easton, for his years of service to the hospital and the community.

“Ron’s leadership on the board has helped keep Bridgeport Hospital financially stable and firmly committed to providing high-quality patient care,” says William M. Jennings, hospital president and CEO. “He has been a model of volunteer leadership for our hospital and the community.”

Held at the Patterson Club in Fairfield, the Auxiliary reception was co-chaired by Rachel Dayan and Wendy Martinenas, both of Fairfield. Nearly 300 people attended the event.

“It’s a great milestone for us to fulfill our pledge to the emergency department project,” says Auxiliary President Ilene Feldman, also of Fairfield. “We have been pleased to support this important initiative to improve the emergency care environment for patients of Bridgeport Hospital.”

The emergency department project began in early 2007 with the addition of 11,000 square feet of new space for treat-and-release services, including new reception, waiting and examination areas as well as a new X-ray suite and additional patient parking. The major medical and holding areas were modernized in 2008. The final phase of the project is underway now, involving upgrades to the psychiatric and trauma rooms. The department receives more than 75,000 patient visits a year, more than any other emergency department in Fairfield County.

Noren: Dedicated to Community Service – Gala honoree Noren is a principal with the Southport law firm of Brody Wilkinson PC, practicing trust and estate law. He follows his grandfather Rudolph F. Bannow and his father Ernest H. Noren as a member of the hospital board. In addition to his term as chairman and several board committee assignments, he co-chaired the emergency department capital campaign and led the successful search for the hospital’s new president & CEO.

Noren also serves on the boards of the Yale New Haven Health System, Fairfield County Community Foundation, Central Connecticut Coast YMCA, Mary L. Fitch Charitable Trust, the Samuel Staples Free School Fund and the Preston Mountain Club. He is chairman of the Plantain Pond Mortgage Club and recently resumed a board position for the Kennedy Center, Inc.

The Bridgeport Hospital Auxiliary: Supporting Healthcare for 50 Years – Since it was established more than 50 years ago, the 400-member Auxiliary has donated more than $4 million to Bridgeport Hospital facility improvements, equipment purchases, nursing scholarships and other projects. The Auxiliary sponsors a variety of fundraising activities throughout the year, including dinner dances and art, book and jewelry sales. In addition, the group operates the hospital gift shop in the main lobby, which underwent an extensive renovation in 2009. Profits from gift shop sales are also donated to the hospital. Many Auxiliary members are also active volunteers who contribute their time and energy in patient care and support areas of the hospital.
