Bridgeport Hospital volunteers honored at annual luncheon

More than 30 Bridgeport Hospital volunteers were honored at the hospital’s April 27 Volunteer Recognition Luncheon for achieving service milestones of 500 to 14,000 hours.

Special awards were presented to Mary Ann Peterson of Stratford, Bertha Nelson of Bethany and Dorothy Williams of Bridgeport.

Peterson volunteers with the hospital auxiliary, in the gift shop and for special projects. Nelson and Williams are both former hospital rehabilitation unit employees who had a combined 62 years of service before retiring in 2006. They have contributed more than 2,000 volunteer hours on the unit since their retirement.

Volunteers recognized for most lifetime hours included Joan Crossman of Fairfield, 14,000; Mary Ann Peterson, 12,000; Anne Lussen and Joe Mezick, both of Stratford, 11,500; and Gina Ryan of Trumbull, 10,500.

Overall, Bridgeport Hospital’s 426 active volunteers contributed more than 64,000 hours during the past year.

“What better way to celebrate the spirit of humanitarianism than by honoring individuals whose dedication, friendship and loyalty are so greatly appreciated,” said Volunteer Services Specialist Patricia Chervenak. “Thank you for enriching our lives with your comforting touches.”

The luncheon, held at Testo’s Ristorante in Bridgeport, was organized by members of the hospital’s Human Resources Department and Volunteer Council.
