Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center receives $5,000 from Cigna Foundation

The Cigna Foundation has awarded a $5,000 grant to the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center for its Mujer a Mujer/Woman to Woman Outreach and Screening Program.

The program raises awareness of breast cancer in the high-risk community of Greater Bridgeport and helps women gain access to free and affordable breast exams, mammograms and other screening and diagnostic procedures at the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center.

The Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center provides free breast cancer screening to medically underserved women to prevent early death from breast cancer. Their free care program is the largest program of its kind in the area.

Breast cancer screening increases the chance that cancer will be caught early when it is more treatable. Women in Greater Bridgeport, particularly minority and elderly women, have a high risk of early death from breast cancer.

The outreach program bridges language and cultural barriers by integrating bilingual breast cancer survivors into the program.

“We are extremely grateful to the Cigna Foundation,” says Donna Twist, Ph.D., the Breast Care Center’s Executive Director and Vice President for Development. “Our outreach program is unique. Women have a chance to speak with someone in their own language who’s been through the breast cancer journey. Cigna’s support means we can continue to reach women who are unaware of their risk for breast cancer and saves lives.”

Part of the Norma F. Pfriem Cancer Institute at Bridgeport Hospital, the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center has served more than 18,000 women and their families since it was established in 1999. A member of the prestigious National Consortium of Breast Care Centers, the Center provides a wide range of diagnostic care and treatment at its Bridgeport Hospital and Fairfield locations, including medical oncology, surgical and chemotherapy services, plastic surgery, mammography and radiation therapy, and genetic risk assessment as well as opportunities to participate in clinical trials.

The Breast Care Center office at 111 Beach Road in Fairfield provides comprehensive women’s wellness services, including nutrition counseling, massage and Reiki therapy, wig and prosthesis fitting, counseling, yoga, Pilates, naturopathic medicine, and other patient support activities. The Center also has a satellite office on Park Avenue in Trumbull. For more information call (203) 255-5300 or visit the Center on the web at www.bridgeporthospital.org/cancer/breast.
