Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center introduces 'Here’s to Your Health Night' for family caregivers

Women are often split between their roles as caretakers and professionals. The demands on their time and energy increase as their families, and careers, grow.

“Women who divide their time between work and home will experience stress and their health will suffer as a result,” says Lynne Taikowski, a member of the Advisory Board and vice chair of the President’s Council of the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center, which provides health and wellness services to prevent illness and promote healing. “They will also neglect preventive care that is so important to staying healthy.”

To address the effects of stress and promote good health, the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center sponsored its first “Here’s to Your Health Night,” an evening of health advice, tips and demonstrations for women. The program took place in Fairfield at the home of Lynne Taikowski and was organized by Taikowski and Tara Coo-Littman, also a member of the Breast Care Center’s President’s Council.

Sessions were held on healthy cooking, nutrition counseling, naturopathic approaches to healthcare, acupuncture, Qigong, Yoga, Pilates, and mental health counseling. Pilates, yoga and other wellness activities have been shown to benefit health.

“A gentle restorative Pilates class can help a woman with self confidence and control, improve sleep and alleviate fatigue, decrease stress and tension and enhance physical and mental well-being,” says Laura Pennock, who teaches Pilates classes at the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center.

“Women see themselves as caretakers and neglect their own health while they care for others,” says Taikowski.“Our goal is to integrate healthy practices into their busy lives and reduce stress and disease in our community.”
