Bridgeport Hospital volunteers saluted for service

More than 50 volunteers were honored for achieving service milestones during Bridgeport Hospital’s annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on May 2 at Testo’s Restaurant in Bridgeport.

Hospital volunteers contributed more than 64,500 hours during the past year, with Emergency Department volunteers racking up more than any other department at 14,000 hours.

Special awards were presented to Newborn Intensive Care Unit “cuddlers” Judy Angell of Trumbull and Edna Miller of Fairfield, who have a combined 50 years of volunteer service, Emergency Department volunteer Joe Mezick of Stratford and Bridgeport Hospital Auxiliary volunteer Arlene Battistelli, also of Stratford. Another Auxiliary member, Joan Crossman of Fairfield, has the most lifetime hours among hospital volunteers, with more than 14,500.

“You cannot underestimate the impact of your interactions with our patients,” hospital President and CEO Bill Jennings told the volunteers.

The Volunteer Luncheon was organized by Volunteer Services Coordinator Patricia Chervenak and the hospital’s Volunteer Services Council—Nancy Caulfield, Joan Crossman, Mary Ann Peterson and Toni Zeleny, with assistance from Joyce Michelin of the Human Resources Department.

“What better way to salute the spirit of humanitarianism than by honoring individuals whose dedication, friendship and loyalty are so greatly valued,” Chervenak said. “Thank you for enriching our lives with your comforting words and deeds.”

Bridgeport Hospital has more than 460 volunteers and 400 auxilians who support patient care, support services and fundraising in a number of roles.
