|Tom Keegan considers himself lucky. His wife, Patti, a breast cancer survivor, was diagnosed in the early stages of the disease and made a full recovery thanks to the physicians and staff at The Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center.
Tom Keegan of Fairfield (third from right, #581) led a team of runners from Merrill Lynch at the recent Fairfield Road Race. The team raised more than $2,500 for The Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center.
“A late-stage diagnosis would have been a very different story,” he says.
Now the couple is giving back to the organization that saved Patti’s life. On June 24, Tom ran in the Fairfield Road Races half marathon, donating the proceeds to the Breast Care Center.
The Keegans began supporting the Center long before Patti’s diagnosis, hosting the Center’s annual Rose of Hope Luncheon, one of the area’s biggest fundraisers.
“Patti and I started out as benefactors of this wonderful center and have now become beneficiaries of the center’s remarkable and supportive services,” says Keegan.
Raising support through the marathon was another way for the couple to show their appreciation for the Center. “Last year, the Center served 609 women free of charge for breast cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment who had no insurance and could not otherwise have afforded the care,” says Keegan. “This is our way of helping another 600 women get help this year.”
Keegan was part of a 17-member team running in the Fairfield Road Races, hosted by the Fairfield Firefighters. The races drew more 3,000 participants who raised funds for charities. Keegan’s team included his co-workers from Merrill Lynch in New York City, Rochester, Los Angeles and Charlotte, NC. Six runners finished the race in less than two hours. The team raised more than $2,500 for the Breast Care Center.
“The Keegans have been wonderful friends of the Center,” says Executive Director Donna Twist, PhD. “They are always thinking of ways to help the Center thrive and grow.”
