Auxiliary fulfills pledge to Bridgeport Hospital with $100,000 gift

More than 150 people attended the Bridgeport Hospital Auxiliary spring gala May 22 at the Birchwood Country Club in Westport.

During the event, the auxiliary presented a $100,000 check from its past year’s fundraising activities to support the renovation of the SurgEase ambulatory surgery unit at the hospital. The amount represents the final installment of a four-year, $350,000 total auxiliary pledge, part of which has already been used to help fund a water wall in the hospital’s recently modernized main lobby.

Taking part in the check presentation at the gala were (l-r) Auxiliary President Ulla Atweh; SurgEase Medical Director Ed Castillo, MD; hospital President and CEO Bill Jennings; Bridgeport Hospital Foundation President Steve Jakab; and SurgEase Nurse Manager Diane Youd.

“The spring gala was a wonderful way to wrap up our most recent four-year pledge to the hospital,” said Auxiliary President Ulla Atweh of Westport. “The event co-chairs and committee did a fabulous job of organizing the gala and making it such a success. On behalf of the entire auxiliary, we thank all of the gala guests and auction contributors for attending and supporting our efforts.”

The gala honored two recently retired physicians, William (Greg) Hulcher, MD and M. Clive Robinson, MD, and Dr. Robinson’s wife Robyn, a retiring auxiliary member.

A resident of Woodbridge, Dr. Hulcher was a member of the hospital board of directors and practiced internal medicine from his office in Trumbull as a member of the hospital medical staff for more than 40 years.

Dr. Robinson, who lives with his wife in Fairfield, was chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery from 1999 to 2013, and is regarded as an international pioneer in minimally invasive heart surgery. He was part of the team that performed New England’s first hybrid ablation procedure for atrial fibrillation in 2011.

The gala was co-chaired by Amparo Castillo of Monroe, wife of SurgEase Medical Director Ed Castillo, MD, and Bonnie Molloy of Fairfield, an auxiliary member and nurse anesthetist at the hospital.

Established in 1959, the all-volunteer Bridgeport Hospital Auxiliary has raised more than $4 million to support facility and equipment upgrades, patient care programs and nursing scholarships at the hospital.
