Perioperative Nursing Program Objectives

At the completion of this program, the perioperative nurse will be able to:

  • Demonstrate proficiency as a scrub and circulating nurse on moderately complex surgical procedures.
  • Describe the effect of pathophysiological and psychosocial factors on patients undergoing specific surgical procedures.
  • Demonstrate principles of asepsis, sterilization and disinfection when implementing perioperative nursing practice.
  • Identify perioperative needs of the patient using the nursing process.
  • Perform perioperative care in a manner that will ensure patient safety according to established standards of practice.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of nursing practice and quality of patient care during surgical intervention.
  • Identify the ethical, moral and legal responsibilities as an integral member of the surgical team.
  • Recognize opportunities for professional growth as a perioperative nurse.
