Cancer Rehabilitation Program

In conjunction with the Norma F. Pfriem Cancer Institute, Ahlbin Rehabilitation Centers provides Outpatient Cancer Rehabilitation Therapy to address pain, weakness, fatigue, scarring and other conditions that may result from cancer treatment. Expert therapists are certified by the Sandie Taubin STAR® Cancer Survivorship Training and Rehab Program.

Cancer rehabilitation therapy includes:

  • Exercises to build strength and flexibility
  • Scar management to increase range of motion
  • Lymphedema (swelling) therapy, prevention and education
  • Techniques to relieve painful joints and tissues due to surgery, scars or radiation
  • Incontinence therapy and treatment of pelvic pain
  • Balance techniques to reduce falls
  • Aquatic therapy
  • Speech, cognitive and swallowing therapy

Latin Women With Power

Conducted with CancerCare of Connecticut, this support group is for Latin women who are in treatment (at any hospital) for any type of cancer. Discussions are primarily in Spanish. Meetings are held for eight consecutive weeks at The Family Center at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Bridgeport.

Living Well with Lung Disease

This is an eight-week pulmonary rehabilitation program offered by Bridgeport Hospital’s Section of Pulmonary Medicine. The program helps patients with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and other lung conditions to breathe easier, improve strength, understand their disease and take a more active role in life.

This American Cancer Society Program helps women with cancer improve their appearance and self-image through hands-on beauty techniques. Moving Forward Cancer Survivor Series

Bridgeport Hospital’s Norma F. Pfriem Cancer Institute, in cooperation with the American Cancer Society, presents “Moving Forward,” a free series of support meetings for adult cancer survivors and their loved ones. All meetings take place from 1:00-3:30 p.m., in the Admisnistrative Conference Room (ACR), first floor, Bridgeport Hospital. Nutrition Counseling for Cancer Patients

Cancer treatments can take a toll on your body, draining your strength and robbing your appetite. But when you have cancer, good nutrition gives your body the energy it needs to heal. Nutrition Counseling with a registered dietitian from the Nutrition and Wellness Center at Bridgeport Hospital can help you get your appetite back on track. By choosing foods and beverages that are healthy and appealing, the registered dietitian will develop a personalized plan for you based on a nutritional assessment, your specific needs and your lifestyle. Our staff includes regsitered dietitians who hold additional certifications in Adult Weight Management from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. 

Consultations are available by appointment with referral from your physician.

Quit Smart's powerful program allows you to break free from smoking in 4 successive weekly sessions with a few simple techniques. The process includes reduction in nicotine consumption, mental control, discussion of alternative options and support. The Quit Smart program has twice the success rate of other smoking cessation programs.

The Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center compassionately guides women through a complete spectrum of breast health services, including screening and diagnostic mammograms, rapid diagnosis of breast lumps, surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, rehabilitation, support groups, and integrated therapies (including nutritional counseling, massage therapy, and more).
