High Schoolers in Trumbull Join Forces to Battle Breast Cancer

High school students from Trumbull raised $13,000 for patient care programs at the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center in their first Catwalk for a Cure fashion show on November 13. The money will be used to provide breast care services, including mammograms, to women with little or no insurance. The show was held at Vazzano's Four Seasons in Stratford.

A high-energy committee of high school students, led by co-chairs Maddy Kenler and Krista Veikos, helped make the fashion show a success. Trumbull student Matt Connelly was the enthusiastic emcee. In addition to a fashion show, guests bid in a silent and live auction.

“We are so lucky to have this wonderful group of young women and men who want to contribute their time and energy to the Breast Care Center,” said Robin Righter, Development Coordinator at the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center. “They feel strongly about giving back to the community and using their talents to support a cause they believe in.”

The shows co-chairs spoke about their commitment to volunteering in their opening remarks. “It is through events like Catwalk for the Cure that the Breast Care Center is able to continue serving the overwhelming number of women in need,” said Krista Veikos. “We are so excited to bring this event to Trumbull and hope that it continues to grow in the coming years with the help of future Trumbull High students. To us, Catwalk for a Cure is the perfect combination of fun, giving back, and creativity. It is a night that unites the community through a common goal: the desire to provide healthcare to all.”

Co-chair Maddy Kenler has a special connection to the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center as the daughter of Dr. Andrew Kenler, one of the Center’s breast surgeons, and took a few minutes to thank her father: “I would especially like to thank my dad, without whom we would not be here tonight. As a breast cancer surgeon, his passion has inspired me to become involved. Ever since I was a little girl, one of my favorite places to go to has been his office. To this day, I am still amazed at his ability to brighten the lives of those who need it most. Thank you, Dad, for teaching me the importance of making a difference.”

Several local businesses contributed to making the evening a success. Students modeled clothing from Teen Scene of Trumbull, Une Minette of Wilton, Dress Code and J. McLaughlin of Westport, and The Look on Main of Stratford. Student-models had their hair done by Salon V of Fairfield and Jo Davi Salon of Trumbull.

Each year, several area high schools hold a Catwalk for a Cure to benefit breast cancer care at the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center. The series began in Fairfield and has spread to Easton, Weston and now Trumbull.

Part of the Norma F. Pfriem Cancer Institute at Bridgeport Hospital, the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center has served more than 20,000 women and their families since it was established in 1999. A member of the prestigious National Consortium of Breast Care Centers, the Center provides a wide range of diagnostic care and treatment at its Bridgeport Hospital and Fairfield locations, including medical oncology, surgical and chemotherapy services, plastic surgery, mammography and radiation therapy, and genetic risk assessment as well as opportunities to participate in clinical trials.
