Fairfield students raise a record $52,000 at fashion show benefit for The Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center

High school students from Fairfield raised a record $52,000 for patient care programs at The Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center in their third annual Catwalk for a Cure fashion show on April 29 at the Bijou Theater. The money will be used to provide breast care services, including mammograms, to women with little or no insurance.

A high-energy committee of 85 high school students from three high schools—Fairfield Warde, Fairfield Ludlowe and Fairfield Prep—helped make the fashion show a success. Over 200 hundred guests attended to enjoy the fashion show and bid in a silent and live auction.

“It was an amazing night,” said Robin Righter, Development Coordinator at The Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center. “The kids really went out all, and the evening turned out to be our best teen event do date. We are so lucky to have committed young women and men working on our behalf.”

In their opening remarks, the show's co-chairs spoke about their commitment to volunteering. They were followed by Mackenzie Haehl, a student who spoke about the importance of early detection.

“This is a call to action. Tonight, I ask everyone in this room to talk to at least one woman about the importance of monthly breast exams. In doing this, you just might save a life and together, think of all mothers, daughters, sisters and wives we can save. Let us act as ambassadors for breast health and spread the word to help stop breast cancer.”

Several local businesses contributed to making the evening a success. Students modeled clothing from Apricot Lane, Cargo Bay, La Moda and Snappy Gator of Fairfield, and Dress Code, J. McLaughlin and Jack Wills of Westport.

Each year, several area high schools hold a Catwalk for a Cure to benefit breast cancer care at The Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center. The series began in Fairfield and has spread to Easton, Weston and Trumbull.

Part of Bridgeport Hospital and the Yale New Haven Health System, The Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center has served more than 20,000 women and their families since it was established in 1999. One of only 200 sites accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), the Center provides a wide range of diagnostic care and treatment at its Bridgeport Hospital and Fairfield locations, including medical oncology, surgical and chemotherapy services, plastic surgery, mammography and radiation therapy, and genetic risk assessment as well as opportunities to participate in clinical trials.
