Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center experts discuss wellness at Fairfield Senior Center

Fairfield, CT — Seniors at the Fairfield Senior Center were introduced to the benefits of health and wellness activities at a hands-on program presented by The Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center on Nov. 14.

Dr. Veronica Waks discusses nutrition and naturopathic medicine with seniors at the Fairfield Senior Center.

“Seniors often suffer from ailments that aren’t life-threatening but can have an enormous impact on their mobility, their cognitive abilities, mood and even sleeping,” says Margaret Andrews, Director of the Fairfield Senior Center. “Holistic therapies can help alleviate their symptoms and improve their quality of life. Complementary and alternative therapies can also help seniors manage chronic illnesses, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, that elders are prone to. This is so important, as people are living longer. Helping them manage illnesses, both minor and major, can help seniors live life to the fullest.”

Doctors, practitioners and nurses from The Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center conducted participatory mini-sessions in their specialty areas. Participants learned about meditation, naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, nutrition and other healing modalities.

Nancy Church, the Breast Care Center’s Community Education Coordinator says, “At The Norma Pfriem Breast Care Center we believe that education and prevention are the best means to staying healthy at any age. Our newly expanded facility on Beach Road offers an even more comprehensive approach to wellness, through services such as yoga, Pilates, naturopathic medicine, nutrition and therapeutic massage, just to name a few. Our Wellness events are another way of getting our message out to the community.”

The event was part of a series of wellness evenings presented by the Breast Care Center in collaboration with community groups and local schools. “Working with community groups has helped us reach more women and men with health information,” says Church. Church is hoping to identify other school and community groups to bring to the Center. Groups interested in scheduling a program with the Breast Care Center can call her at 203-255-5300.
