Maintaining Quality of Life: Rehabilitation for Older Adults
Do you know someone age 55 or older who needs help staying active and healthy? Bridgeport Hospital has programs to help older adults maintain physical strength and stamina.
The Geriatric Rehabilitation Program provides physical, occupational and speech therapy under the supervision of Ahlbin Rehabilitation Centers staff. Patients and their families receive specialized help in areas such as mobility, balance and fall-prevention, dressing and bathing, speech or eating problems, overall wellness, and strengthening. The facility, which also features aquatic therapy, serves people over age 55.
Women's Strength Training classes are available in Shelton and Southport. This unique program is aimed at empowering women with the tools to safely improve their muscular strength and tone and enhance their bone density, physical fitness and health. It is particularly helpful for those over age 55. Participants learn how to work out in small groups, also under the supervision of Ahlbin Rehabilitation Centers staff. (No physician referral required.)
Living Well with Lung Disease is an eight-week pulmonary rehabilitation program offered by Bridgeport Hospital's Section of Pulmonary Medicine. The program helps patients with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and other lung conditions to breathe easier, improve strength, understand their disease and take a more active role in life.
"Our goal is to work with seniors and their families to help patients maintain their independence and quality of life by focusing on their unique physical and psychosocial needs," says physical therapist Paul de Regt.
A physician's referral is required for some of these programs. To find a physician affiliated with Bridgeport Hospital, or for more information about any of these services, including locations, dates, and costs, please call us toll free, 24/7, at 1-888-357-2396.
