Why You Should Always Call an Ambulance
|
If you suspect that you or a loved one is having a heart
attack, call 9-1-1 immediately. Never drive yourself—or
anyone else—to the hospital.
The 9-1-1 operator will send an emergency medical services
(EMS) team to your location to begin diagnosis and
treatment. The team may include:
- Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs)
who can provide preliminary care during
respiratory, cardiac and trauma emergencies and
- Paramedics who are specially trained and licensed
to provide the next level of care by delivering
medications orally or by starting an intravenous
drip (IV), beginning ECG monitoring to locate artery
blockages and shocking the heart back into rhythm.
“Paramedics do some of the same things that will be
continued in the Emergency Department. Calling 9-1-1 is
like getting a jump-start on diagnosis and treatment,” says
John Pelazza, EMS Coordinator at Bridgeport Hospital.
“Best of all, a paramedic is in constant communication
with the Bridgeport Hospital Emergency Department,
reporting test results and symptoms so the medical teams at
the hospital will be prepared when the ambulance arrives.”
Other advantages to calling an ambulance (rather than
driving yourself or a loved one) include:
- Faster arrival at the hospital. An experienced
EMS team will know the best route, as well as
alternate routes in case of road closures or traffic.
- Decreased risk of automobile accidents that could
occur if symptoms worsen while you’re driving
yourself or a loved one to the hospital.
- Availability of specialized equipment and medicines
in the ambulance.
- Immediate care by trained professionals who
can respond to sudden changes in your condition.

Research has linked good oral health with a decreased risk for heart
disease. Did you know that bacteria in your mouth can travel through
the body? This bacteria can cause plaque to accumulate in the arteries
where it can harden and block blood flow to the heart.
Along with regular flossing, the first step in having a healthy mouth is
to brush your teeth at least twice a day. This FREE handy toothpaste
squeezer will help you easily get the last drop from the tube!
