Introducing…The Connecticut Burn Center at Bridgeport Hospital

Connecticut’s only burn center has a new name—The Connecticut Burn Center—and is undergoing a $1.5 million modernization to benefit patients, their families and staff.

After the sun went down, however, his sleep was far from restful. “I tossed and turned; I took medication to help me fall asleep. Then I dozed rather than slept, and I woke up throughout the night,” he says. His wife, Cynthia, asked him to sleep in the spare bedroom because he snored, which disturbed her sleep.

The project includes:
  • Construction of new family suite (right), offering overnight accommodations for families.
  • Redesigned patient rooms for greater patient and family privacy and comfort.
  • Improvements to the Center’s entrance, waiting area and nurses’ station.
  • Installation of a dedicated elevator to transport burn patients to and from the operating room.

The Burn Center was established in 1973 with fundraising help led by then-Bridgeport Hospital Chairman of Surgery Andrew Panettieri and his wife Henrietta. Today, The Connecticut Burn Center is one of only 59 burn centers in the United States and is recognized by the American College of Surgeons and the American Burn Association for meeting high national standards in patient safety and quality care.

“The new family suite will provide a comfortable place for patients’ families to stay at the hospital,” says Burn Center Nurse Manager Jacqueline Laird. “We have critically burned patients whose families are here with them 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

“To have your family with you means everything,” says retired pilot Paul Hagopian, who was a Burn Center patient after he was severely burned in a 1994 plane crash.
