For decades, surgeons used the same shape artificial joint for their male and female patients. But today, women who are considering total knee replacement surgery can have a prosthesis (artificial device) that’s designed specifically for the female frame.

“In general, a woman’s knee is not only smaller than a man’s, it has a distinct shape,” says Orthopedic Surgeon David Bindelglass, MD, who, in 2006, performed the first gender-specific knee replacement surgery in Fairfield County. “The gender-specific prosthesis is narrower to match the size and shape of woman’s body.”

These gender-specific knees provide women with better results than their one-shape-fits-all predecessor. “Prior to the gender-specific joint, women reported more pain after surgery,” says Dr. Bindelglass. But now, according to Dr. Bindelglass’s patients, the new gender-specific knees can make everyday activities—such as climbing stairs and getting in and out of a car—a whole lot easier!
