TAVR Program Screenings Offered

The first Bridgeport campus patient screenings for TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement) were held in April by Edward Tuohy, MD, Cardiology, John Forrest, MD, Cardiology, Yale-New Haven Hospital, and Catherine Wright, APRN. The two patients screened underwent TAVR, a recently approved, significantly less invasive alternative for severe aortic stenosis than more traditional surgical aortic valve replacement. Patients must be considered high risk or inoperable for consideration. Aortic valves are placed through the femoral artery directly through the aorta without a sternotomy.

Bridgeport Hospital screens two to three patients monthly. Screenings include patient history and a physical with review of a recent echocardiogram, as well as available cardiac catheterization data. Umer Darr, MD, Surgery, evaluates the patient to determine if traditional surgery is suitable. Cardiac catheterization, pulmonary function tests and CTA of the chest and thoracic/ femoral arteries are required to determine eligibility.

The comprehensive program offers options for the FDAapproved Edwards Sapien valve or the investigational Medtronic CoreValve, depending on the patient. Referrals can be made through Dr. Tuohy, Stephen Marshalko, MD, Cardiology, or the Cardiology department at 203-384-3844.
