Neuroscience is the branch of medicine that focuses on the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. At Bridgeport Hospital, the neuroscience team is made up of skilled neurosurgeons, neurologists, physiatrists, and specialists in related disciplines, including radiology and rehabilitation.

Our neuroscience team provides extraordinary care, offering advanced diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. The Yale Spine Center at Bridgeport Hospital specializes in advanced spinal fusion surgery, using the latest open and minimally invasive surgical techniques. Alternatively, some minimally invasive surgeries offered may help avoid the need for spinal fusion surgery.

Bridgeport Hospital neurologists include those with advanced training in several subspecialty areas. These include epilepsy, headache, movement disorders (e.g., dystonia, Parkinson’s disease), multiple sclerosis and neuroimmunology, neuromuscular medicine (e.g., Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis – ALS, muscular dystrophy), as well as stroke.

Support for surgical patients includes organizing preoperative tests and admission procedures, making discharge arrangements, which may include rehabilitation and physical therapy, and helping patients understand insurance benefits. After surgery, patients recover in the surgical intensive care unit and neurosurgical inpatient unit staffed by skilled nurses, therapists and other healthcare professionals.

Many of our neurosurgical patients benefit from physical, occupational and speech therapy services provided in our inpatient Rehabilitation Unit, and from the outpatient services provided by our affiliate, Ahlbin Rehabilitation Centers, at convenient locations in Bridgeport, Southport, Stratford and Trumbull.
