Admission Requirements

Applications deadline: Feb 1. Interviews begin in July.

Applicants for a doctoral degree must demonstrate:

  • A bachelor’s degree in nursing from a regionally accredited college or university (or the international equivalent).
  • A quality point average of 3.0 or higher with a science GPA of 3.0.
  • Two semesters of biology, at least one semester of chemistry, one semester of microbiology and one semester of college math. Physics is strongly recommended.
  • Registered Nurse license to practice in the United States at the time of application. A Connecticut Registered Nurse license IS required on admission.
  • A minimum of one year’s experience as a Registered Nurse in a critical care setting (ER does not fulfill this criteria).
  • Current BCLS, ACLS and PALS certification (must be maintained while in the program).
  • GRE analytical writing score of 4 or better. Composite scores are reviewed in relation to the overall application.

Formal Admission Process

This cohort program begins each year in May. Program applicants are accepted on a rolling basis. Applications are reviewed by the Graduate Admission Committee. Students seeking admission must submit:

  • A completed application. Apply online at www.fairfield.edu/sonapp.
  • A non-refundable $60 fee.
  • A professional resume.
  • Official transcripts verifying completion of an undergraduate degree. All foreign transcripts must be evaluated by an approved evaluating service, which can be found at www.fairfield.edu/eval.
  • Two (2) recommendations, including one from your current supervisor and another from an individual who can assess your clinical expertise in an acute care setting.
  • A three (3) page, double-spaced personal statement about your career goals and future contributions to the nurse anesthesia profession.
  • Official report of GRE scores.
  • Copy of current RN license; licensure to practice in Connecticut is required on admission.

International Students

International students whose native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in the English language by taking either the TOEFL or IELTS exams. For graduate school admission, a TOEFL composite score of 550 for the paper test, 213 for the computer-based test, 80 on the Internet-based test or an IELTS score of 6.5 is strongly recommended. Scores must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service (TOEFL) or IELTS.org. Fairfield University’s ETS code is 3390.

Interview Process

Applicants who meet the above criteria may be invited for an admission interview.

The applicant has the right to:

  • Be treated in a respectful manner.
  • Be communicated with in a truthful and timely manner.
  • Have his/her application considered with the same degree of consideration as any other applicant.
  • Be notified when application is incomplete and what materials must be submitted.

The applicant has the responsibility to:

  • Inform the program administration of changes in contact information, address, or email.
  • Submit the application before the deadline.
  • Be truthful in the application and all aspects of communication.
  • Provide program with material necessary to make decision for admission.

Selection Process

The program accepts up to 14 students per academic year. Therefore, all applicants who meet minimum admission requirements may not necessarily be selected. The admissions committee evaluates each applicant. Selection is based on:

  • Transcripts, GPA, GRE
  • On-site interview
  • References
  • Work experience
