Connecticut Burn Center at Bridgeport Hospital reverified by Burn Association, College of Surgeons

Monday, September 11, 2017

BRIDGEPORT, CT (Sept. 11, 2017) – The Connecticut Burn Center at Bridgeport Hospital, the only dedicated burn care facility in the state, has received official notice that it has been reverified with no deficiencies by the American Burn Association (ABA) and American College of Surgeons (ACS).

“We commend Bridgeport Hospital for its commitment to excellence and providing quality burn care to its patients,” wrote Nicole Gibran, MD, chair of the ABA Verification Review Committee, and Kimberly Hoarle, ABA executive director, in notifying Connecticut Burn Center Medical Director Alisa Savetamal, MD, of the reverification.

The term of the reverification is three years. The Connecticut Burn Center is the only ABA/ACS-verified burn center in the state and one of only 66 in the United States.

“We are proud of Dr. Savetamal and the entire burn team for this achievement,” said William M. Jennings, president and CEO of Bridgeport Hospital and executive vice president of Yale New Haven Health. “Not only is the burn center a cornerstone of Bridgeport Hospital, it is also an important service for burn patients from throughout Connecticut and surrounding states.”

“Burn care is extremely complex, and takes careful coordination among skilled physicians, nurses, physician assistants, physical and occupational therapists, dietitians, social workers and other health professionals,” said hospital Section Chief of Trauma, Burns and Surgical Critical Care Shea Gregg, MD. “We are fortunate to have a team dedicated to all aspects of patient-centered burn care, from prevention through treatment and recovery.”

Established in 1973, the Connecticut Burn Center at Bridgeport Hospital treats nearly 200 inpatients and receives more than 1,000 outpatient visits each year.

In 2011-2012, the Connecticut Burn Center at Bridgeport Hospital underwent a $1.5 million modernization of its facilities, generously supported by firefighter organizations, public utilities and other corporate donors and individuals, to create a more private, comfortable and functional environment for patients and families. Highlights of the renovation project included the addition of an overnight suite for families of patients; redesigned patient rooms for greater privacy and comfort; renovated rehabilitation room and specially equipped shower room; and a larger nursing station.

Bridgeport Hospital, part of Yale New Haven Health, is a non-profit 501-bed acute care hospital with two campuses (plus 42 beds licensed to Yale New Haven Children's Hospital). Its Bridgeport and Milford Campuses serve patients from across the region. The hospital admits more than 23,000 patients and provides nearly 350,000 outpatient treatments annually. The Connecticut Burn Center at Bridgeport Hospital is the only burn center in the state and one of only 64 verified burn centers in the United States. Bridgeport Hospital is committed to providing safe, compassionate and cost efficient care to its patients and the community. www.bridgeporthospital.org
