Breastfeeding Support and Programs

Choosing to Breastfeed

Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization for the first six months of life. Breast milk contains all the nutrients an infant needs in those first months of life. Breastfeeding exclusively during that time will help them achieve optimal growth, development and health. For however long you choose to nurse, your baby’s immune system benefits greatly from breast milk. We encourage you to sign up for our breastfeeding class or support groups for more info.

Breast Pumps

If you need to pump while you are in the hospital, Bridgeport Hospital has high-grade electric pumps available, which include a kit and handheld breast pump that you can take home. Lactation Specialists are available to assist you with ordering a personal breast pump for home.

As a nursing mom, you may have questions and concerns along the way: How do I know if my baby is getting enough milk? How do I fit breastfeeding into my lifestyle? What are different breastfeeding positions? How do I begin weaning?

Bridgeport Hospital offers the following breastfeeding support groups and classes tailored to help you and your baby:

Breastfeeding Basics

This informative class will help parents gain the knowledge and skills necessary to have a rewarding breastfeeding relationship. Included: benefits of breastfeeding, establishing and maintaining milk supply, latch-on and positioning techniques, how to know if baby is getting enough, trouble-shooting, debunking myths and fitting breastfeeding into your busy lifestyle. The class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
