Strategies to Relieve Engorgement

Breast Pumps

If you need to pump while you are in the hospital, Bridgeport Hospital has high-grade electric pumps available, which include a kit and handheld breast pump that you can take home.

You may also rent breast pumps at several area locations. Check with your insurance carrier to confirm if your policy covers the rental or purchase cost. Click the links of popular breast pump manufacturers below to learn more.

Classes and Support Groups

As a nursing mom, you may have questions and concerns along the way: How do I know if my baby is getting enough milk? How do I fit breastfeeding into my lifestyle? What are different breastfeeding positions? How do I begin weaning?

Bridgeport Hospital offers the following breastfeeding support groups and classes tailored to help you and your baby:

Breastfeeding Basics for Expectant Moms

This informative class will help parents gain the knowledge and skills necessary to have a rewarding breastfeeding relationship. Included: benefits of breastfeeding, establishing and maintaining milk supply, latch-on and positioning techniques, how to know if baby is getting enough, trouble-shooting, debunking myths and fitting breastfeeding into your busy lifestyle. The class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.

Breastfeeding Support Group for New and Expectant Moms

Breastfeeding can be challenging. Resolve any breastfeeding doubts and difficulties you may be experiencing during a mom-to-mom support group facilitated by a Board-Certified Lactation Consultant and mom. Topics will include: how to get off to a good start, finding comfortable and relaxing breastfeeding positions, establishing and maintaining an ample milk supply, how to “tune in” to baby’s rhythm, relationship support, introducing solids, returning to work and how weaning happens. Group discussions are based on the principles described in the book, Breastfeeding Made Simple: Seven Natural Laws for Nursing Mothers, 2nd Edition; however, ample time will be available to address the individual concerns of the mothers who attend. Copies of the book will be available for sale at the group. Babies in arms welcome!
