What is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist?

A Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist is an Obstetrician who specializes in High-Risk Pregnancies, Prenatal Diagnosis and Medical Complications of Pregnancy. Our doctors have completed a four-year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and have done additional fellowship training in Ultrasound and High-Risk Pregnancies. While some obstetricians have the experience and training to handle complicated pregnancies, our Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists can provide consultation and co-management of high-risk patients. At Bridgeport Hospital, a close relationship has developed between the doctors in the community and our specialists to provide the best possible care in complicated pregnancies.

Our nursing staff is led by Linda Tampellini, RNC (Registered Nurse Certified), BSN, MSN, CDE (Certified Diabetes Educator). She holds certification in Maternal Newborn Nursing and Electronic Fetal Monitoring. Our other perinatal nurses are Maria O’Connor, RN, CDE; Margaret Romaniw, RN; and Ann Hubbell, RN. Our nurses provide diabetes education, fetal monitoring, premature birth prevention education, and perinatal education.

Sonographers assist our physicians in performing obstetrical ultrasound. Sonography training consists of a 1-2 year course in which sonographers learn physics, anatomy, and the interpretation of ultrasound images. Our sonographers have an average of 10 years of obstetrical ultrasound experience. Our sonographer staff includes Tara Amarante, ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography), Pamela Hauben, ARDMS, Elizabeth Bisignano, ARDMS, Jessica Kennedy, ARDMS, Irina Martynenko, ARDMS, and Cheryl Wyskiel, ARDMS.

Genetic Counselors

Genetic counselors are health professionals with graduate degrees and experience in the areas of medical genetics and counseling. Genetic counselors work as members of a health care team, providing information and support to families who have members with birth defects or genetic disorders and to families who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions. Both of our genetic counselors, Dara Lieberman and Kara Whoolery-Snyder, are board certified by the American Board of Human Genetics.
