Gastroenterology

Program Director’s Message

Welcome to the Gastroenterology and Hepatology fellowship program at Yale New Haven Health Bridgeport Hospital. Our program was established in 1968.  We have an established history of training gastroenterologist and hepatologists by providing comprehensive clinical programs in gastroenterology and liver diseases. Our fellowship program is closely affiliated with Yale School of Medicine Section of Digestive Diseases. Our fellows rotate for three months every year at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven for training in gastroenterology, liver diseases and advanced endoscopy.
We offer a three-year ACGME accredited fellowship training program with 1-2 fellowship positions a year for a total of 4 gastroenterology fellows Our fellows start their endoscopic training their very first day, averaging well over 1,000 procedures at the time of graduation. We feel that the size of our fellowship program allows for an apprenticeship type training by working closely with faculty and staff.

We have scheduled conferences and journal clubs that take place weekly, with Friday afternoons being protected time for Yale School of Medicine Section of Digestive Diseases didactics and case conference. Our fellows are engaged in clinical research and dedicated time during their second and third years of training to complete research and quality and safety projects.

Overall, our mission is to foster a strong and collegial learning environment that emphasizes the growth and development of our fellows. All of our faculty are dedicated to teaching and also serve as mentors, helping cultivate the network for future career development. Our fellows upon completing fellowship have been extremely successful in their gastroenterology and hepatology careers.

Sincerely,
Caroline Loeser, MD, FAGA, FACGD

About

The field of gastroenterology and hepatology is everchanging and dramatically expanding. As such, the practice of our specialty becomes increasingly complex. Our curriculum fulfills the minimum requirement of 18 months of inpatient and outpatient consultation experience and is further supplemented by our journal club, weekly Yale didactics and case conferences. Our fellows undergo endoscopic training from day one, along with establishing continuity in patient care in our weekly hepatology and general GI clinics.

The first year consists of 9 months of consultation and endoscopic services at Bridgeport Hospital, and 3 months of consultation and endoscopic services at Yale New Haven Hospital York Street Campus. The second year consists of 6 months of consultation and endoscopic services at Bridgeport Hospital, 3 months of inpatient consultation services in hepatology at Yale Hospital York Street Campus, and 3 months of clinical research. The third year consists of 6 months of consultation and endoscopic services at Bridgeport Hospital, 3 months of elective, and 3 months of outpatient subspecialty clinics. Throughout all three years, our fellows establish longitudinal care with their patients at our weekly continuity clinics and pursue research projects.
