Children’s (Pediatrics)

Emergency medicine specialists care for children in the dedicated Children’s Emergency Center at Bridgeport Hospital, the only one in the area. Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital’s pediatric specialists provide consultation to enhance care of pediatric patients being seen in the ED. Our child-friendly environment has a separate waiting room featuring child-sized furniture and an age-appropriate activity area. The pediatric-themed exam rooms further help make the visit as pleasant as possible.

Embedded within Bridgeport Hospital, the Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital pediatric inpatient unit is designed and decorated with the child in mind. All our patient rooms are single occupancy and are equipped with furniture to accommodate a caregiver’s overnight stay, offering families privacy and comfort. A child life specialist is available to help your child cope with the adjustment of being in a hospital setting through a variety of play and educational tools.

We place as much emphasis on a child's emotional needs as we do their medical needs. We are committed to the philosophy of patient- and family-centered care and believe that the best health care is based on partnerships among patients, families and providers.

A family lounge with a kitchen area called Bunny's Café is available for parents of hospitalized children. Bunny's Café includes a kitchen with full-size refrigerator, microwave oven, coffee maker, café tables and a computer workstation with internet access.

Outpatient overnight sleep studies for pediatric patients are offered through Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital’s Sleep Center. The Sleep Center is staffed by registered polysomnographic technologists who are specially trained to make children feel comfortable. Studies are read by a Yale Medicine pulmonologist who is board-certified in pediatric sleep medicine.

Our tiniest patients are monitored and cared for in our Level III NICU by an expert team of neonatologists, advanced practice providers and specially trained nurses. Our NICU prides itself on the highest quality, family-centered care.

A large array of surgical services is offered for children of all ages at Park Avenue Medical Center in Trumbull and at Bridgeport Hospital. Our pediatric patients at both locations are cared for by a team specialized in treating children. The surgical team is comprised of pediatric specialists in anesthesia, craniofacial and plastic surgery, orthopedics, surgery, pediatric and adolescent gynecology, ENT (ear, nose and throat), transplant and urology. Together with nurses, social workers, dietitians and child life specialists, they provide high-quality, compassionate and family-centered care in an environment conducive to the needs of children. The Pediatric Specialty Center in Trumbull is one of eight locations providing families access to nationally ranked specialties and expert providers close to home. The Centers offer over 35 pediatric specialties and programs, infusion centers, radiology, phlebotomy and rehabilitation services. Many offer extended hours to accommodate families.
