General Surgery

General surgery, despite its name, is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal organs, e.g., intestines including esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. General surgeons also deal with diseases of the torso involving the skin, breast, soft tissue and hernias.

Robotic Surgery

More and more hospitals have similar technology. But what really matters is the experience of the surgical team.

When considering robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery, keep in mind that Bridgeport Hospital physicians have performed more than 1500 procedures using this technology, more than any other hospital in Fairfield County.

Compared to traditional open surgery, most patients who have robotic surgery for minimally invasive procedures have less blood loss during surgery, a shorter hospital stay, less scarring and less post-operative pain. For many patients, recovery time is dramatically shortened, so most can resume their regular daily activities in about half the time as with traditional surgical methods.

With its flexible robotic arms and sophisticated three-dimensional imaging system, the da Vinci Surgical System allows physicians to perform delicate procedures through tiny incisions with unprecedented precision. The small incisions result in less blood loss, less pain, less scarring and a lower risk of infection.

Milford Campus

The Bridgeport Hospital Milford Campus offers surgery services including minimally invasive and computer-assisted procedures in technologically advanced operating rooms. Procedures include general surgery, gynecology, joint replacement, opthamology, orthopaedics, otolaryngology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, podiatry and urology.
