Bridgeport, CT (Nov. 5, 2014) – Bridgeport Hospital is the first hospital in Connecticut to install and use the latest-generation da Vinci Xi robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery system. The first procedures on the new system (three hysterectomies) were performed at the hospital Oct. 28.
The Xi’s advanced technology, which includes high-definition optics, provides better access to the abdomen and chest, and allows surgeons to complete more advanced procedures. It also improves the quality of procedures performed by using staplers and blood-flow assessment.
In addition to urological, gynecological and thoracic procedures, the hospital will introduce applications for general, oncologic and colorectal procedures. The Xi replaces the da Vinci S system used at the hospital since 2007. Bridgeport Hospital was the first hospital in Fairfield County to offer minimally invasive robot-assisted surgery and the hospital has performed over 1,900 robot-assisted procedures, more than any other in the county.
