Bridgeport Hospital opens new gyn clinics and ambulatory medicine unit

Bridgeport Hospital has opened new gynecologic oncology and urogynecology specialty clinics and new quarters for its MedEase ambulatory medicine unit on the first floor of the hospital’s Perry Building. Medical services in the gyn clinics are provided by experts from the Yale School of Medicine.

MedEase had been temporarily located in the emergency department after previously vacating its former quarters on the sixth floor. Renovations to the Perry Building include the addition of a dedicated entrance from Grant Street Plaza, a new waiting and reception area, new exam rooms and a new infusion room. MedEase also provides pre- and post-procedural care, seven-day antibiotic therapy, spinal taps and other services.

“Now we can see the fruits of our labors,” said Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology Harold Sauer, MD, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony earlier this month. “We have a space that’s dedicated to and designed for the functions want wanted it for.”

“Our patients will love it,” said MedEase Nurse Manager Kathy Coarse. “And we have room to grow.”

The renovation project took nine months to complete. Fletcher Thompson was the project’s architectural firm and Bismark Construction Company the general contractor.

Bridgeport Hospital Chief Operating Officer Norm Roth noted that the renovations resulted in not only a cosmetic upgrade but also structural improvements to the Perry Building, which is one of the older buildings on the hospital campus.

Earlier renovations in the nearby Northeast Building, in the former Radiation Medicine suite, produced new quarters for the hospital’s Cardiothoracic Surgery and Surgical Oncology specialists.

The current gyn specialty clinic and MedEase area was last occupied by Bridgeport Hospital’s acclaimed Child FIRST (Family Interagency Resource, Support and Training) early childhood intervention program. Since it was established in Bridgeport in 1991, Child FIRST has expanded to 15 different areas of the state, and its main headquarters is now in Shelton.
