Students flock flamingos for Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center

Friday, December 27, 2013

Fairfield, CT – Three students from Fairfield Ludlowe High School raised nearly $4,000 for Bridgeport Hospital’s Norma F. Pfriem Brest Care Center by participating in a Flamingo Flocking Fundraiser during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The funds will benefit the center’s programs for women in need.

The girls, Emma Bernstein, Sarah Mason and Jane Shanley, chose two neighbors to start the flocking. Neighbors made a donation to have the flock taken away, and the girls moved in after dark to take the flamingos to their next destination.

The girls learned about the breast care center through their mothers. Jane’s mother is a yoga instructor at the center. Sarah’s mother is a member of the center’s President’s Council. Emma’s mother supports the center.

“This is the fourth year the girls have held this fundraiser for us,” said Donna Twist, executive director and vice president for development at the breast care center. “Their moms have been associated with the center for many years. It’s great to see their daughters getting involved.”

The fundraiser concluded on Oct. 31 with the girls visiting the breast care center’s Fairfield location to present the proceeds from the flocking.

“Our teen volunteers are amazing,” said Twist. “These girls came up with the idea themselves and presented us with a heartfelt gift.”
