Angeleen Pingol, RN, and Julia Renz, RN, West Tower 8 (WT8) earned a Patient Experience Award for Caring and Excellence (PEACE) for helping a patient experiencing increasing anxiety and depression. The patient did not like being alone, especially when a complication extended her hospital stay. Pingol and Renz found creative ways to improve the patient’s mood, taking her for a walk outside and arranging for a visit from her fiancé and puppy in the lobby. The two nurses stayed after their shifts to make the patient’s stay better, and the patient was extremely grateful.
Amy Heidenreich, RN, Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU), received the Patient Experience Award for Caring and Excellence (PEACE) for managing a critically ill patient. Heidenreich made key decisions that expedited the patient’s move from the Emergency Department to the Intermediate Care Area and later the MSICU. While the patient was in the MSICU Heidenreich managed his lines, drips and kept him stable while calmly explaining everything to his family. Thanks to Heidenreich and her team, the patient was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital for emergency surgery and survived a potentially life-threatening infection.
Daniel Brown, RN, Labor and Delivery (L&D), received a PEACE award for his care of a first-time mother who needed to be induced due to rising blood pressure. On her second night in the hospital, the patient and her husband met Brown, who immediately put them at ease, answering every question and calmly guiding the patient through the induction process. Brown was with the couple during overnight care and when the patient unexpectedly needed a C-section. Later, when the patient’s blood pressure spiked again postpartum, she was sent back to L&D, where Brown explained every step, stayed calm and taught the couple newborn basics such as swaddling, breastfeeding and diapering.
