Concussions, other ‘Hot Topics in Sports Medicine’ focus of Oct. 11 pediatric medical conference in Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, CT (Sept. 12, 2017) – The 40th annual Maxwell Bogin, MD, Lectures in Pediatrics, “Hot Topics in Sports Medicine,” will take place 8 am - 2 pm Wednesday, Oct. 11, at Fairfield University’s Quick Center for the Arts, 200 Barlow Rd. Fairfield. The pediatric medical conference is a collaboration between Bridgeport Hospital and Fairfield University’s Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies.

Sports medicine experts will present three lectures:
  • Jordan Metzl, MD, sports medicine physician, New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery, will discuss “Sports Specialization in Young Athletes: Is it a Good Idea?”
  • Peter Kriz, MD, associate professor of pediatrics and orthopedics, Rhode Island Hospital/Brown University, will speak about “Current Trends in Prevention of Youth Sports Injury.”
  • Hamish Kerr, MD, fellowship director, sports medicine, and associate professor, internal medicine/pediatrics, Albany (NY) Medical College, will present “Concussion in Youth Athletes: Is this Hype or Science?”
The Maxwell Bogin, MD, Lectures in Pediatrics were established at Bridgeport Hospital in the 1970s. The lectures were continued after the consolidation of pediatric services by Bridgeport and Yale New Haven hospitals in 2012 which created the second campus of Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital in Bridgeport.
