Yale New Haven Health offers patient resource guidelines when choosing between an urgent care and emergency medicine facility

Wednesday, September 20, 2017
New Haven, CT (September 20, 2017) –Yale New Haven Health and PhysicianOne UrgentCare created a partnership earlier this year to bring together one of the most comprehensive healthcare systems in the nation and the leading provider of urgent care in Connecticut. This collaboration helps provide increased access to high-quality care in Connecticut and Westchester County through urgent care centers that can more rapidly care for non-life threatening injuries and illnesses. Patients can be seen by Yale New Haven Health physicians for follow-up care, helping to ensure healthier residents.

But how does a patient know when to choose an urgent care facility or an Emergency Department? While both provide timely, expert care for minor and potentially serious ailments, Emergency Departments – or Emergency Rooms – and urgent care centers are quite different. While Emergency Departments provide care for life-threatening injuries or illnesses, urgent care centers offer convenient, professional medical attention for non-life threatening conditions including the flu and common cold to broken bones, sprains, cuts, allergic reactions, and minor burns, and hundreds of other conditions.

The two unique services can offer patients distinctly different and varying levels of care and expertise, depending on the injury, sickness or ailment:

Urgent Care Centers Are Appropriate for:
  • Influenza
  • Colds
  • Back pain
  • Sprains
  • Earaches
  • Low-grade fevers
  • Sore throats
  • Minor fractures
  • Minor cuts and burns
  • Minor rashes
  • Migraines
  • Mild to moderate asthma exacerbations
  • Ear wax removal
  • Minor eye injuries
  • Allergies
Emergency Rooms Are Appropriate for:
  • Coughing or throwing up blood
  • Serious burns, severe bone breaks and deep wounds
  • Severe bleeding
  • Poisonings
  • Sudden dizziness, confusion, drooping, weakness or other stroke symptoms
  • Trouble walking, seeing, or talking
  • Unusually severe head pain
  • Head injury with loss of consciousness
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Symptoms of cardiac trouble
  • Fainting or loss of consciousness
  • Moderate abdominal pain
  • Overdoses
  • Persistent diarrhea or vomiting
  • Very high fevers
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Extreme pain
  • Seizures
“When it comes to choosing an appropriate treatment facility, everyone wants the best care,” said Gayle Capozzalo, EVP and chief strategy officer for Yale New Haven Health. “What’s important for patients and care providers to know is urgent care facilities can provide the same level of care as Emergency Departments for countless minor ailments. Many of our Emergency Departments treat the most critically ill and injured patients throughout our state. To help us manage resources and focus on the care required by each patient, we are trying to educate the general population on how they can partner with us to accomplish those goals.”

Yale New Haven Health includes five hospitals and a network of hundreds of dedicated primary care physicians and specialists through its Northeast Medical Group.
