Bridgeport Hospital Foundation receives $25,000 grant from Newman’s Own Foundation to help underserved outpatients

Tuesday, December 12, 2017

BRIDGEPORT, CT (Dec. 12, 2017) – Bridgeport Hospital Foundation has received a $25,000 grant from Newman’s Own Foundation, the independent foundation created by the late actor and philanthropist, Paul Newman to support the unmet needs of underserved outpatients.

The award was made by Newman’s Own Foundation as part of its commitment to empower individuals and extends the inpatient Fay Fund to include outpatients at Bridgeport Hospital’s Primary Care Center and Ahlbin Rehabilitation Centers.

“Our outpatients and their families often struggle with a host of challenges caused by the effects of poverty that are harmful to their health and well-being,” said Bridgeport Hospital Foundation President Steve Jakab. “The Primary Care Center and Ahlbin Rehabilitation Centers care for people who are suffering, not only physically but also socially and economically.”

Research published in 2016 by the American Journal of Medicine suggested that the social determinants of health cause 80 to 90 percent of all health problems. The support to be provided by the Newman’s Own Foundation grant will enable Primary Care Center and Ahlbin Rehabilitation Centers staff to meet the non-medical needs of patients and improve their well-being in the face of difficult challenges.
