Bridgeport Hospital achieves advanced certification for total hip/knee replacement

Wednesday, March 15, 2023

BRIDGEPORT, CT (March 15, 2023) – Bridgeport Hospital (BH) has earned The Joint Commission’s Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Knee Replacement. This certification demonstrates commitment to the highest level of care and safety for patients. It also recognizes the hospital’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards.

To achieve this certification, Bridgeport Hospital underwent rigorous on-site review processes and evaluated compliance with disease-specific care standards for our total hip and knee replacement programs.

Bridgeport Hospital has long been a leader and innovator in joint replacement surgery, employing a full range of techniques and therapies that put the patient first at every stage of treatment, from diagnosis through treatment and recovery.

“The patient is always at the center of what we do,” said Amit Lahav, MD, one of the surgeons who perform hip and knee procedures at Bridgeport Hospital. “One size does not fit all,” he said. “We evaluate and treat every patient as an individual while adhering to strict national standards to ensure the best possible outcomes.”

Bridgeport Hospital has helped pioneer important advances in care, such as minimally invasive robot-assisted surgery, which uses sophisticated imaging and specialized instruments to support shorter hospital stays and a faster recovery.

“Not every patient can undergo joint replacement surgery and expect to play sports like a professional,” said orthopedic surgeon Joel Malin, MD. “But if they can recover enough mobility to comfortably perform everyday activities of life, we have done our job.”

Another important aspect of rehabilitation from joint replacement surgery is to help patients modify their behavior to continue getting healthy. That’s where Bridgeport Hospital’s specially trained orthopedic nurses and therapists play a key role.

“Advanced certification means our patients receive the highest level of quality care and orthopedic expertise when undergoing total hip or knee replacement surgery,” said Susan Garrison, RN, associate director of nursing for orthopedics. “Our patients receive world class care. Our entire team of physicians, nurses, therapists and others are committed to maintaining the high standards set by the Joint Commission in the delivery of joint replacement surgery.”
